When arriving for your first session.

It is perfectly normal to feel a little anxious at your first appointment. This may be the first time you have spoken with a professional about your concerns. You may also feel quite relieved that you have made this decision.

In preparing for your first session it can be helpful to think about what your goals for therapy are as well as the reasons that brought you to therapy. Remember that all psychologists are required to follow a strict code of ethics which includes keeping your confidential information exactly that – confidential.

What to bring.

If you are coming with a referral from your GP, you will need to bring;

  • A referral and/or relevant treatment plans (Mental Health Treatment Care Plan) from your GP addressed to Jane Stevenson or Changes Psychological Services

  • A copy of any previous assessments or reports by other health professionals (paediatrician, psychiatrist, occupational therapist, speech pathologist).  This might include reports from your teachers or school counsellor

  • Medicare card

  • Credit card or cash

If self-referring check with your Private Health Insurance company regarding your ability to claim this service.

Location.

We are located on the first floor of the Astina building at 7-9 Beach Street, Forster (in the HUB). There is a lift for your use. Public parking is available.

When you arrive, you will come to our wait area. Please take a seat and we will greet you at your appointment time. It is good to arrive about 5 minutes early for your first appointment so you have plenty of time to park and find our office.

We prioritise privacy for clients and stagger appointment times to ensure your anonymity.

A great relationship.

The quality of the relationship with your psychologist is one of the most important factors of successful treatment.

We believe in establishing a warm and genuine therapeutic relationship with you.

Practise is important

Practising is a typical part of therapy as working on your goals between sessions helps speed up your progress towards obtaining those goals. This looks very different for different clients and takes your needs into account.
